It’s interesting how an issue that should only really exist in India is debated in Canada and the US when most Americans/Canadians couldn’t care less about “Khalistan”.

Reading the article makes it clear that the info was mostly leaked by the Canadian government, through Judy Thomas (former Canada NSA, under Trudeau). With the ongoing relationship reset between Canada and India, this article was probably a way to release (leak) information that would come out in the Nijjar trial later and could trigger another diplomatic crisis. This was basically a "rip some of the bandaid off now and avoid a future crisis" article.

Note the "sprinkle" of Indian concerns added in the article, re the bombing of Air India (1985) and a "large number on less publicized bombings" in India. The article then quickly points out that the air India bombers got to live freely in Canada, avoiding prison time, due to "error and incompetence" by Canadian investigators. But it stops there.

The article fails to explain the motivation of the Indians, however. For example, Canada basically set a precedent of not acting proactively to prevent terrorist attacks - like in the case of the Air India bombing, despite having all the intelligence before the bombings. They had even pulled out their inside mole so that the source doesn't become criminally "implicated" once the bombing happens - that is insane because they had inside knowledge of the plot before the bombings happened ([source](https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/csis-may-have-had-mole-in-air-india-conspiracy-1.360913).

The article also lightly brushes on the fact that many of the Khalistani rallies are "incendiary" but not illegal. But the article should have pointed out how many of the rallies are skirting hate speech. Lots of videos show calls for "kicking out hindus" and killing Indian government officials and diplomats. Hate speech is a sensitive issue and, while I get that it can be hard to convict, the police should start testing some of the hate speeches in court and let a judge decide. We saw how Canadian law enforcement clamped hard on the pro-palestinian protests, for less incendiary speeches even. So I don't buy that "freedom of speech" argument when so much of it is skirting "hate speech".

I don't want to believe that India assassinated him, but there can be many reasons someone can be considered an enemy. It's possible that the attack was done with the expectation of not being caught or the information not being made public.

Nijjar was a declared terrorist /militant.  He died of no natural reasons, like other dead terrorists.

If there is an increase in khalistan support in Punjab or a perception of an increase can be created, it'll help Modi play up the dangers to consolidate Punjab's Hindu votes against AAP. I'm an American born Indian OCI and I believe that India did assassinate Najjar, and unfortunately did adhere to setting the standard of killing a Canadian citizen in Canada.


Somewhat unrelated to Nijjar, but kind of related is the US Justice Governments 15 page indictment of Nick Gupta, an Indian national who utilized a honeypot hitman, an undercover agent of the US, to plan the assassination of a US citizen. In page 10 (paragraph 28), a video of Nijjar's dead body is sent to Nick. 


Nick has been caught trying to complete a hit, as an agent of India, of a US Citizen in US soil. The Justice Department caught him with a video of Nijjar's dead body. Unless the US DOJ is lying about this, or lying about the evidence (which I can't see why); the facts are simple here. **Someone acting as an agent of India is in possession of a tape with the dead body of a Canadian citizen.**

Unless Khalistanis can answer why only want Indian Punjab and not Pakistani Punjab (contains Lahore, a sacred site to Sikhs) I am not going to take them seriously at all.

Pretty much all Khalistani separatists live outside India. Does it make sense to you a Croatian separatist during the Yugoslav wars would be living in France during the war?

There exist 27 million people in Punjab and that region has very very little problems with separatism within India, and in fact . When even communist separatists in India exist (in Chattisgarh and Jharkhand). Punjabis too contribute quite a lot to the Indian Army in terms of manpower (btw the Indian Army is an all-volunteer force). Punjabis and Maharashtrians probably have the most state-specific soft power pan-India and many people enjoy Punjabi food and music in India. It's not like Hindus fear Sikhs are threatening them or anything. There do exist extremists but even Buddhism has extremist elements in Myanmar and such.

Sikhs only make 55% of punjab(16 million) hindus 40% of it (10 million) how do you think it is a good idea to create a Sikh state with such an diverse population. 

Also the map which they "claim" as part of khalistan has a hindu majority population of 80%. These people are complete buffoons.

I'm a little puzzled why India would find it necessary to target Sikhs in foreign countries.  They may be involved with separatist movements at home, but I don't think they sponsor terrorism.  Canada is a relatively stable place with different values.  Maybe they will fit in better there.  In which case, they wouldn't be an issue for India at all.

Putting aside for a moment Trudeau's allegations, I can't figure out why the Indian government would want to risk an assassination in a foreign country that has a top-notch security apparatus.
The dead guy was obviously not a good guy but he doesn't appear to have been Dawood/Osama level bad either. A small fish , relatively speaking.  I don't think the Indian government is that dumb to carry out such a risky assassination of a relatively low value target. Without more details,  the allegations don't add up.

No matter who it is, how is killing of a foreign national justified? Whatever he was, he could be tried in Canadian courts, a public issue could be made against him. 

If Pakistan believes Advani was a terrorist and kills him, will it be acceptable? How does this serve cause of justice when Indian state is seen as the same as Saudi, Turkey or China? 

Does this inspire confidence for defence deals with US and the West that we desperately need?

What saddens me is there are many Indians who are not backing the Indian govt instead speaking against India and that too based on an allegation which the Canadian govt is still not sure about it's just speculation.

Some Indians have become dumb like Americans. As Americans think that CBI was the mastermind behind 9/11 and are ready to believe this theory instead of condemning Osama bin Laden and Pakistan for hiding him.

Most Khalistanis are Boomer Uncles who settled in Anglo Countries in the 80's and still live in the fear-mongering and paranoia of the same period with little to no legitimacy, Indian Punjabis are one of the richest communities in the country today afterall.
